THE CONCEPT OF INTERNET
BY JOSHUA HELENA M
BAPRM 42571
The internet is at once worldwide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination between and medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computer without regard for geographical location. (Baran, 1994)
The internet is global system of interconnected computer networks that use internet standard, internet protocol suite to serve several billions users worldwide. The word today is a wide spread information infrastructure, the initial prototype of what is often called the national or (Global or galactic) information infrastructure.
The internet carries an extensive range of information resources and server such as the inter-linked hypertext document of the World Wide Web (www) the infrastructure to support email, and peer to peer networks.
ORIGIN OF THE INTERNET
Its history is complex and involves many aspects; technological, organization and community, And its influence reaches not only to technical fields of computer communication but throughout society as we move towards increasing use of online tools to accomplish electronic commerce, information acquisition, and community operations
The origin and history of internet date back to 1960s when developers saw great potential in computer with regard to sharing information on scientific and military research. The first recorded description of social interaction that could be enabled through networking was a series of memos written by JCR licklider of MIT in august 1962 discussing his ‘Galactic NETWORKING’ concept. He envisioned a global interconnected set of computer through which everyone could quickly access data and programs from any site.
Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first paper on packet switching theory in 1961 and the 1st book on the subject in 1964. Kleinrock convinced Robert of the theoretical feasibility of communication using packet rather than circuits which was a major step along the path towards computer networking.
The other key step was to make the computer talk together .To explore this, in 1965 working with Thomas Merrill, Roberts connected the TX -2 Computer in Mass- to the  Q-32 in California with a low speed dial up telephone line creating the first (however small) wide-area computer network ever built.

In 1966 Robert shifted to DARPRA to develop his plan for ARPANET. The dream was realize in 1969 when the ARPANET was brought online. During its early stage of inception, internet was primary used by computer expert, engineers, scientists and librarians. As there was no PCS I that age the users was few, who had to learn a computer system of operation. In 1972 for the first time E-mail was adopted for ARPANET by Ray Tomlinson of BBN. It was he who used the symbol @ on his teletype to link the username and address.
